Motability is a charity that aims to provide disabled people with access to a car and you may be eligible if you must be receive either the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC DLA), the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP) Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP) , the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS) or the Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) you may be eligible to join the Motability Scheme.by using some, or all, of the Higher Rate Mobility Component of their Disability Living Allowance (DLA).
The scheme is designed to make it easier for people with disabilities to have access to transportation, which can significantly improve their independence, quality of life, and ability to participate in society. The Motability Scheme is operated by Motability Operations, a not-for-profit organization that works in partnership with car manufacturers, dealerships, and other suppliers to provide a range of vehicles to meet the needs of participants.
The Motability Scheme offers a comprehensive package that covers the cost of the vehicle, insurance, road tax, maintenance, and breakdown cover. Participants can also add additional features and adaptations to the vehicle to make it more suitable for their specific needs.
To be eligible for the Motability Scheme, an individual must have at least 12 months' award remaining on their mobility allowance and be able to use the vehicle for their benefit or that of a named driver. Some restrictions apply, and not all types of vehicles are available on the scheme.
Under this scheme you take out a leasing agreement with Motability but unlike normal finance it does not depend on your credit score - as long you as you receive the necessary benefits then you are automatically accepted. When choosing this option, you may pay an initial rental, then the agreed amount of your allowance is used for 36 months to provide you with a car, inclusive of insurance, servicing, road tax and breakdown cover. Please note that extra charges apply to if you drive more than 60,000 miles in the car.
If you currently receive the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement, this also entitles you to a car under the Motability scheme using, normally at lower monthly rentals.
If you live in Scotland, you can apply for a motability car through the scheme if you have been awarded any of the following:
